The Earth Science Center for Computation (ESCC)

The Earth Science Center for Computation* was established in 1998 to promote research in data and computationally intensive aspects of the Earth sciences, in response to the data tsunami from the wide-range of Earth observing systems and the ever-growing need for computation for data processing and imaging. The ESCC is one of a number of Rice centers affiliated with the Ken Kennedy Institute for Information Technology, a Rice institute to advance research in computing and information technology. The Rice Center for Research Computing provides campus-wide shared computing infrastructure. The ESCC provides department level linux computing platforms and mass storage, and partners with Kennedy Institute members to develop proposals for large cluster computing systems.

The ESCC operates a number of linux servers, several small linux clusters, a number of shared memory computers, and a large mass storage system. Click here for equipment and services.

The ESCC operates large-bed plotting facilities for use by the entire Rice community. Click here for Personnel.

The ESCC is a stakeholder in several of the large cluster computers operated by the Center for Research Computing. ESCC faculty were key members of the team that acquired EEPS dedicated nodes on Rice’s NOTS (Night Owls Time-Sharing Service history of name)HPC/HTC cluster running on the Rice Big Research Data (BiRD) cloud infrastructure, and the Chevron Visualization Center (established with grants from NSF and Chevron), which is part of the new  EEPS VizLab. The Visualization Center has an 8 by 14 foot visualization wall for 2D and 3D image display and manipulation.

While the Chevron Visualization Lab is available to the entire Rice community, the EEPS NOTS Condo is dedicated to EEPS faculty and graduate student research exclusively.

ESCC research areas can be found at affiliated faculty member websites.
