Research Statement

With our colleagues at FUNVISIS, Caracas, Venezuela, we have completed a very successful data acquisition effort, having conducted both active and passive land-marine seismic experiments, and numerous geologic/geochemical studies on the Venezuelan mainland and in the Leeward Antilles archipelago. (In Venezuela BOLIVAR has a formal multi-year counterpart, GEODINOS, funded by Venezuela). Our study area is about the size of California and its continental margin, an area greater than 600,000 km2, and has an equally complex Late Mesozoic-Cenozoic history.

BOLIVAR passive source seismic investigations utilized ~80 FUNVISIS/PASSCAL/OBSIP and Rice broadband stations. We completed an extensive active source seismic program in 2004, acquiring ~6000 km of marine reflection data, including 4 onshore-offshore/OBS/reflection transects, and one OBS/reflection transect. Geological, geochemical and geochronological investigations have included structural mapping, age dating, and fission track analysis on the Leeward Antilles archipelago, and in Venezuela. The project goals are formulated as 5 hypotheses involving 1) continental growth, 2) continental mass redistribution, 3) exhumation of high-pressure, low-temperature metamorphic and mantle rocks, 4) development of Neogene basins as a geodynamic phenomenon, and 5) the interplay between the lithospheric and sublithospheric mantle between the Caribbean plate and the South American craton. To date we have used BOLIVAR seismic data in basin analysis studies in the western Venezuela continental margin, and in the Grenada and Tobago basins, developing a new model for opening of the Grenada Basin. The seismic wide-angle data suggest a genetic relationship between the Leeward Antilles arc crust, the modern Lesser Antilles arc, and the extinct Aves ridge, supporting a model of accretion of island arc crust to the South American continent; the active source seismic data are still being analyzed. Age dating of the Leeward Antilles rocks points to a regular age progression to the arc accretion process supporting kinematic models of Caribbean evolution. The passive source seismic data are in a preliminary stage of analysis, as is geodynamic modeling to understand the processes of arc accretion and continental growth. We are requesting funds to complete analysis and synthesis of a splendid, multi-faceted dataset.

Intellectual Merit: BOLIVAR is foremost investigating the growth of continents and processes associated with arc-continent collision in a continent-ocean transpressional plate boundary zone. We believe that these processes have applicability to plate interactions in the Cenozoic, and with some modifications, to all geologic history since the inception of plate tectonic processes.

Intellectual Merit: We propose a multidisciplinary, international investigation of the Alboran Sea, Gibraltar arc, Atlas Mountains and surrounding areas in the western Mediterranean using passive and active seismology, magnetotellurics, geochemistry/petrology/structural geology, and geodynamic modeling. This project, known as PICASSO, has now been funded in Spain and Ireland as a collaborative E.U.-U.S. program, with proposals from a number of other E.U. nations submitted or in process. The project was selected as the pilot experiment for TopoEurope, an EarthScope-like initiative recently approved by the European Science Foundation. The U.S. PICASSO investigators are from Rice (Lee, Levander), the University of Oregon (Humphreys), WHOI (Chave, Evans), and the University of Southern California (Becker, Platt). Cenozoic tectonic activity in the Alboran Sea and Gibraltar arc of the western Mediterranean constitutes a small but vigorous orogeny occurring in the far western end of the Alpine-Himalayan orogenic belt. It encompasses the easternmost Atlantic (the Atlantis accretionary wedge), Alboran Sea, Gibraltar arc (consisting of the Betic mountains and Neogene Gaudalquivir foreland basin of southern Spain and the Rif Mountains of North Africa), and the Atlas Mountains, which taken together we term the Alboran system. Models used to explain Alboran system tectonics include 1) oceanic slab rollback at an orogenic termination, 2) mantle lithosphere convective (i.e., drip-like Rayleigh-Taylor) instability that removed the base of the lithosphere, 3) continental lithospheric delamination including parts of the crust and 4) various more traditional subduction models. The Alboran system is rich in conceptual models, but poor in quantitative models, and it is also data poor, particularly in the form of high resolution upper mantle studies, and an integrated approach to understanding its development. Generally speaking, continental lithosphere that has existed above a subducting slab experiences secondary convection processes such as delamination or convective instabilities. The first-order question in the Alboran system is whether the mid-Tertiary collapse of the continental crust now found in the western Alboran Sea, the widespread mafic and other volcanism, thrust emplacement of the Rif and Betics, and the recent uplift of the Spanish Sierra Nevada and the Atlas are the result of a single ongoing slab roll-back phenomena in a high-radius of curvature trench, a delamination-like or lithospheric drip-like process, or more likely, a product of several different but related processes, e.g. slab rollback metasomatizes the adjacent continental lithosphere with fluids, which enables delamination and convective removal. Each mantle removal process implies different causes and forms of crustal and lithospheric construction, recycling, deformation and uplift, and makes specific diagnostic signatures in crust and mantle seismic velocity and anisotropy structure, and spatial and temporal geochemical melt patterns that can be used to discriminate models. As this class of small-scale convective processes is invoked as an important driver in almost all orogenies regardless of age, another important question that we are examining is: How do we recognize their different signatures in ongoing and past orogenies? Globally, there is no clear picture of convective instabilities, because there are very few places in the world where convective instabilities in continental lithosphere are currently taking place that can be studied with high enough resolution to place constraints on the causes and consequences of these instabilities. The Alboran region is a system that can be studied in its entirety at high resolution, unlike larger orogenic zones

A set of interacting processes associated with the migrating Mendocino Triple Junction (MTJ), extending from the surface to asthenospheric levels, act to modify North America lithosphere from a subduction complex at Cascadia to the San Andreas transform plate boundary, leaving coastal California in its wake. We propose seismic and geodetic investigations to provide improved imaging of the structure, fabric, and seismic and aseismic deformation of the MTJ region so as to better understand the dynamics of this transition zone. Gorda crust and overlying sediment subduct and appear to become incorporated with accretionary terranes from the Cascadia subduction zone as this mass flows into the emerging transform margin and becomes structured into the San Andreas strike-slip system. Simultaneously, slab gap opening south of the Gorda slab causes asthenospheric ascent and decompression melting, which magmatically underplates North America near the San Andreas fault. The reprocessed and inflated lithoshpere thickens to create a small Cape Mendocino orogenic plateau, while erosion fluxes large fractions of the upper crust back to the subduction zone along tectonically controlled north-trending rivers. Nearby, Gorda-Juan de Fuca subduction results in the Cascade volcanoes, which also contribute to continental crust growth, segregation and recycling. This set of crustal modification processes are accompanied by deformation across a range of scale from broadly distributed to highly localized, making them good targets for seismic and geodetic imaging. In addition, the region experiences all types of seismicity including repeating earthquakes and slow earthquakes offshore and episodic tremor and slip events in the southern Cascadia subduction zone, thereby providing useful information on fault kinematics and dynamics. The mantle imparts a dominant control on the processes occurring near the MTJ through its control on plate strength and kinematics and the flux of heat and mass from the asthenosphere to the North American plate. Despite the obvious control exhibited by mantle processes on this system, current imaging is neither broad enough or of sufficient resolution to image the set of structures of interest. In our first proposal we received funding to deploy an array of ~80 BB seismograph stations in the Mendocino Triple Junction region. These instruments are being installed at the time of writing, most of the seismograph sites have been permitted, and a many of the sites have been prepared for installation. [The instruments have only recently been delivered to IRIS]. This proposal is very simple, we are making two almost independent requests: 1) We are requesting funds to redeploy these 80 seismographs to more completely examine the Mendocino region with emphasis on the Cascade volcanoes, and the southern Cascadia subduction zone, and 2) We are requesting funds to analyze the seismic data acquired in the first proposal, and the data we are proposing to acquire in this proposal.

Regional and global seismic travel time tomography studies show that the Earth's upper mantle has a high degree of lateral heterogeneity, with fluctuations in seismic velocities up to °6% in Vp and °8-9% in Vs. These anomalies are often found in bodies whose size is at the edge of resolution with teleseismic data using ray-theoretical methods. Recent work to incorporate aspects of wave character (i.e., fat rays or banana-donuts) in the tomographic inversions has illuminated smaller scale, previously hard to image anomalies, such as those from low velocity zones in the deeper parts of the mantle. The larger scale fluctuations in the mantle are indicative of both chemical variations and physical state differences (e.g. melt phases) as well as temperature fluctuations. Determining the geometry and amplitude of the seismic velocity distribution is an important means of understanding the geodynamics of the Earth's surface and and upper mantle. Despite the great successes in imaging the Earth's interior using travel time tomography, the relative coarseness of tomography images has led to a situation in which details of mantle circulation and mantle hetereogeneity derived from large and small scale convection are still obscure. The goal of this research project is develop and apply iterative elastic waveform tomography to teleseismic data. This is a means of seismic image formation by iterative data fitting, i.e., an optimization formulation of the seismic inverse problem which requires a method for simulating the propagation of seismic waves, and a method to update some or all parameters in the (an)elastic wave equation so that the simulated wavefield matches or fits a collection of observed data. Waveform tomography has the possibility of improving the resolution of images of the Earth's upper mantle by more than an order of magnitude.

High resolution images made with waveform tomography will more thoroughly utilize the data from the USArray component of Earthscope and permit better geological interpretations of the structure of the Earth's crust and upper mantle beneath North America. This is particularly important in the western U.S., where both earthquakes and volcanoes are scientifically poorly understood natural hazards. The development of waveform tomography generally, and of extended variants incorporating velocity analysis in particular, also can significantly affect the development of industrial seismic technology used in the exploration for petroleum reserves over the coming decade. Many of the issues addressed in our work are also pressing in the industrial context; advances in algorithm design and computer performance offer similar opportunities for improved imaging. A significant fraction of our students enter the oil industry upon graduation, so this project should provide an excellent and unusually forward-looking training resource. The theoretical and practical aspects of the research undertaken in this project will be disseminated to the scientific community, particularly graduate students and post-doctoral researchers, in part through a series of workshops on imaging science that has been funded by the NSF Earthscope program in the coming 3 years, and being organized by one of the PIs of this grant (AL).

We are proposing to continue work on advanced seismic image formation for the shallow subsurface. This proposal specifically has a multi-tiered approach that emphasizes data acquisition, conventional processing, and advanced processing, including:

1. New seismic imaging/inversion technology development, 2. New seismic experimentation in the form of a shear wave (3-component) seismic survey at Hill Air Force Base, Ogden, Utah (HAFB), and 3. A 3-D survey at an as yet unspecified DOE site.

Under our previous DOE contact (DOE - ) we acquired a 2-D seismic dataset in 1998, a 3D reflection, 3D tomography and 2-D vertical seismic profile/surface datasets in 2000 at HAFB.

We have completed processing the 2D datasets with conventional and advanced techniques and have published results from this survey. To date we have we have completed the 2-D processing of the 1998 data producing 2-D tomography, post- and pre-stack depth migrated images using conventional reflection processing methods, pre-stack depth migrated images using advanced image focusing techniques, and Kirchhoff inversions.

The 3D datasets are now in the final stages of processing with conventional and advanced techniques. The 3-D tomography data are now completely processed and interpreted. The 3-D reflection data are currently being processed using traditional reflection processing techniques and 3D post-stack depth migration.

This proposal reviews results from the HAFB data, algorithm development, outlines additional work to be done with this data, proposes 2 new surveys, and elaborates on additional seismic processing technologies we propose to develop specifically for shallow investigations including elastic inversion using waveform tomography and the generalized Radon transform.

The HAFB 2-D and 3-D images clearly delineate the bopunds of a buried paleochannel in which DNAPLs have settled, ponding at the lowest points of the channel, atop a clay aquiclude.

The 3-D reflection and tomography datasets clearly image the channel in 3-D, and show the highly variable nature of the channel structure. The 3-D tomography experiment shows that compressional velocities increase by a factor of ~7.5-10 from the surface to the top of the aquiclude at 4-14m depth. The VSP/Surface seismic experiment waveform tomography images underscore the rapid vertical and lateral seismic velocity heterogeneity of the test site. The VSP-surface seismic waveform inversion shows that velocities change laterally by a factor of about 2-4 on a scale of 2-3m at any given depth.

We are proposing to acquire 2-D S wave data at HAFB and another 3-D reflection/tomography dataset with limited S-wave data at another location. We are proposing to extend the waveform tomography methods to the elastic case, to more completely characterize the mechanical properties of the subsurface, extend the wide-angel migration techniques to 3-D for application to the 3-D reflection datasets, and to develop and apply 3-D acoustic and elastic Generalized Radon Transform methods for 3-D reflection data inversion.

My research has largely been guided by two interests: seismic wave propagation and imaging, and understanding the formation of mountain belts. These two intellectual interests complement each other nicely in the field of lithosphere seismology. All aspects of seismology are important to understanding the evolution of mountain belts, but the images from deep crustal reflection seismology have profoundly changed the way we view the formation of mountain belts. The early images from deep crustal reflection seismology showed both the large scale horizontal transport of crustal packages in mountain belts, and highly complicated lower crustal reflections in many tectonics environments, particularly regions of orogenic collapse. To understand the source of deep crustal seismic signatures my colleagues and I have gone from a few simple numerical experiments, to rather elaborate numerical models of seismic velocity distributions which are based on mapped exposures of deep crustal terranes and petrophysical data. My research has made contributions to seismic acquisition methods, seismic modeling, and seismic imaging. All of these areas have a large number of scientists actively engaged in research, and much of my research frequently has been done in parallel and in collaboration with others efforts.

In seismic acquisition my research group was among the first to develop dense onshore-offshore profiling as a standard seismic acquisition technique; a now standard acquisition method in continental margin studies (Levander et al., 1987; Lafond and Levander, 1995, Henstock et al, 1997). The Brooks Range seismic investigation, conducted with the crustal seismology group at the USGS, merged reflection and refraction seismology into a single acquisition method. (Levander et al., 1994, Fuis et al., 1995; Wissinger et al 1997, 1998), a technique that has been widely used in other field studies (e.g., Mendocino, LARSE I and II, New Zealand).

To complement the combined reflection/refraction datasets we have acquired, my students, postdocs and I have developed processing methods for these data, in particular for migrating wide-aperture seismic data. This extends the imaging methods developed for near-vertical incidence to the far more complicated ray geometries that arise for large source-receiver offsets in wide-angle seismic investigations. (Lafond and Levander, 1993, 1995; Henstock et al., 1997; Henstock and Levander 2000). Interestingly this imaging method also appears to be very effective for very shallow seismic data acquired for environmental investigations, and lately we have been applying and extending the techniques developed for crustal exploration to investigating the upper few 10's of meters of the earth.

My colleagues and I have developed outcrop based stochastic models of crustal heterogeneity for predicting the seismic response of complex geologic structures. (Holliger and Levander, 1992; Holliger et al. 1993, Levander et al, 1994a, 1994b; Holliger and Levander 1994; Lendl et al, 1997). These models capture both the statistical properties of outcrop data and when translated to seismic models capture the statistical properties of deep crustal seismic data.

In specific seismic acquisition campaigns I have been involved in large projects that have contributed to the understanding of the structures and processes operative in the central, southern and northern San Andreas transform plate boundary zone, the Brooks Range fold and thrust belt, and the western United States orogenic plateau.

In the San Andreas transform we identified and described the importance of remnant fragements of the Farallon plate as a part of the structural architecture of the margin (Meltzer and Levander, 1991; Henrys et al., 1993; Lafond and Levander, 1995). We have observed whole crustal strike slip faulting in both central California at the Hosgri fault (a proto-San Andrea) and near the Mendocino Triple Junction at the present San Andreas fault (Henstock et al., 1997; Henstock and Levander, 2000). The seismology group at Caltech has subsequently identified whole crustal strike slip faulting on the San Andreas between the San Gabriel Mountains and the Mojave. This observation places severe limits on models of tectonically resetting the Moho and on the rates of lower crustal flow and Moho topography.

The Brooks Range seismic experiment images demonstrated whole crustal detachment faulting, whole crustal duplexing, and lower crustal subduction beneath an intact Rocky Mountain type fold and thrust belt. (i.e., unlike in the conterminous US the central Brooks Range has not experienced much post-orogenic extension, and is therefore intact). The observation of detachment faults reaching the Moho supports models of orogenic float in which the entire crustal column is transported during orogenesis. Rthe observation of lower crustal subduction beneath the Brooks Range provides one of the few direct images of lower crustal delamination and recycling to the mantle within the world's orogenic belts.

The Deep Probe experiment examined the large scale lithospheric differences between three provinces: The Proterozoic terranes of the US southwest that have been involved in Phanerozoic plate boundary tectonics, the Archean Wyoming province which has been tectonically altered by the Laramide orogeny, and the Hearne province, a stable Archean province. The large scale differences are profound: The Proterozoic terranes are underlain by tectonically active (i.e. "Cenozoic") mantle, whereas both of the Archean terranes appear to be underlain by tectospheric (i.e. "Archean") mantle. The transition from one mantle type to another is abrupt, occurring over a distance of 150km. The large scale crustal structure reflects more the original accretion of the continent than modern tectonism, underscoring the overriding importance of mantle control on surface tectonics.

The CDROM project (Continental Dynamics of the Rocky Mountains) is a large scale geologic and geophysical investigation that builds on the results of the Deep Probe experiment. Coordinating the efforts of 20 investigators at 14 institutions, the CDROM project, led by Karl Karlstrom at the University of New Mexico, combines seismic, structural geology, geothermometry, geobarometry, geochronology, and tectonic geomorphology studies to investigate the Proterozoic accretion of the terranes of the southwestern US to the North American continent, and to understand the Cenozoic-Mesozoic evolution of the Rocky Mountains. My part of the project is reflection seismic investigations of the Jemez Lineament, a zone of Cenozoic magmatism that appears to coincide with one of the ancient accretionary sutures.
