The charge of the EPMA use is needed for the maintenance of our instrument and accessories. The rates (see table below) depend on the type of user, time used during workday or weekend, assisted or unassisted work, etc. Booking (and invoicing) can be made:

  • Per session (unit price per session in the table below), where three types of sessions cover one full day of using the EPMA:
    • Session 1 (Morning session): from 9 am to 1 pm (4 hours)
    • Session 2 (Afternoon session): from 1 pm to 5 pm (4 hours)
    • Session 3 (Evening/Overnight session): from 5 pm to 8 am next day (15 hours).
  • Per hour. When the EPMA time is booked by the hour, the “Hourly rate” applies (see table below, “By the hour”) and the time/price is calculated in increments of 30 minutes. Note that booking “by the hour” is using the “Hourly rate”, which is a higher price than the price per hour within a session. For example, for Rice users, the price for unassisted EPMA work on Session 1 (total of 4 hours) is $100 ($25 per hour), which is cheaper than booking 4 hours “by the hour” (4 × $30 = $120). If less than 4 hours are needed, hourly rates will apply.

For EPMA use longer than 3 hours, the booking by the session is recommended. If less than 10 hours are used for the evening/overnight session, then the time used will be charged as “By the hour” and not “By the session”.

The users who would need to acquire data using EPMA multiple times or on a regular basis, are encouraged to go through training sessions at the beginning. After training is complete, , the users should continue the EPMA work unassisted. If assistance is needed for a full session, the assisted time will be charged.

** External academic users should contact the Lab manager for booking Weekends and Public Holiday EPMA time and rates.

***Prices excluding sale tax. An amount equal to 8.25% from the invoice will be additionally charged as sale tax for users outside the academic system. The prices are negotiable, based on the type and complexity of each EPMA project and the time required for data acquisition, exporting reports etc. Please contact the Lab Manager (g.costin@rice.edu).

Weekend and Public Holiday: Session 3 during weekdays and Sessions 1, 2 and 3 during weekends are not assisted regularly. Bracketed are per hour booking rates. For booking assisted EPMA work during evenings or weekend sessions, please contact the Lab manager. Only users with experience on our instrument will conduct unassisted work during evening sessions and weekends or public holidays. Inexperienced users who need to book the EPMA for weekend time need to be assisted by the Lab Manager.

An additional charge as “Operator time” ($20/h) will be incurred in addition to the assisted rate when samples are sent directly to the lab for analyses.

Any first-time academic user, if books and uses the microprobe for at least 3 full days, gets his/her first Session (it should be the session 9 am-1 pm) free of charge. This session consists in training on the microprobe software, sample navigation, tests on his/her own samples, new calibrations if needed etc.

External academic users having on-going research projects or collaborating with Rice faculty or Research Scientists (the EPMA work is part of collaborative work and publications) qualify for internal rates (Category 1 in the table above).

During unassisted instrument time, the user (and his/her P.I.) if liable for any damage resulted on the EPMA instrument and lab.
