Awards & Honors

Martha Lou holds the distinction of being the first female geology graduate of Rice in 1957. Following Rice, she was a technical assistant to M. King Hubbert. She is our alumni liaison and departmental historian. She is become one of the most effective advocates for our students and student members of professional and scientific societies. She established the Douglas and Martha Lou Broussard Fellowship at Rice, which supports female graduate students. Her support for the American Association of Petroleum Geologists made all AAPG Bulletin articles freely accessible to the public online.

She is an honorary member of the AAPG, a recipient of the Distinguished Service Award of the AAPG, past Vice-President and Chair of the AAPG House of Delegates, and has been a leader in the activities of the Houston Geological Society, the Gulf Coast Association of Geological Societies, as well as the AAPG.
